An unusually large number of Jews are included in the list of candidates seeking political office in Baltimore. In fact, according to some of the political leaders in the city, more Jews have filed certificates of candidacy for the primaries on September 8 than ever before in the history of the city. There are no Jews, however, listed for Congress or the State-wide posts—Governor, Attorney – General, Comptroller and Clerk of the Court of Appeals.
A hard fight amongst Jews looms in the race for the Democratic nomination to the State Senate in the Fourth District. All three of the candidates—E. Milton Altfeld, Abram C. Joseph and Sydney R. Traub—are Jews. Another Jew, Louis Binder, who also sought the post, now held by State Senator Harry O. Levin, withdrew from the contest and then filed for re-election to the House of Delegates. A Jewess, Mrs. Rose I. Loeffler, is seeking one of the six Republican nominations for the House of Delegates in the Fifth Legislative district.
Of the fourteen Democrats who have filed for the House of Delegates in the Fourth District, twelve are Jews. Only six of the fourteen candidates can be nominated.
