The creation of a world Sabbath bank to furnish financial assistance to Jews who find themselves in economic difficulties because of their strict observance of the Sabbath, was decided upon at the closing session today of the world congress of Shomrei Shabbos, the League for Upholding the Sanctity of the Sabbath. The congress also adopted a resolution appealing to the entire cultural world and to all organizations connected with the proposed calendar reform plan to assure the fixity of the Sabbath.
The congress also authorized its World Executive to make certain that the Sabbath would be included as one of the two rest days when the plan for the five-day week is realized in the United States. The American delegates had expressed optimism that the growth of the five-day week plan would solve the problem of Sabbath observance. A decision to appeal to all the world powers to mitigate the effects upon the Jews of the compulsory Sunday rest day was also adopted.
M. Gruenberg was reelected president. Rabbis Bernard Drachman, M. Treistmann, Aaron Teitelbaum, Wolf Gold, M. Ferner and Gedaliah Bublick, M. Stavisky, Jonas Travers and Jehudah Rosenberg and Dr. Henry Keller were the Americans elected to the central executive committee.
