Detroit (Sep. 11)
Former United States Marshal Henry Behrendt will be the next sheriff of Wayne County, which includes Detroit. In Tuesday’s primaries Mr. Behrendt defeated the incumbent for the Republican nomination and since there is no Democratic nominee the nomination is tantamount to election. Mr. Behrendt was chief of police of Lansing, the capital of Michigan, for many years.
In 1914 he was appointed Federal marshal for Eastern Michigan by President Wilson. From 1922 until last Fall he served on the Federal Jury Commission. A veteran of the Spanish-American War and associated for many years with the International Association of Police Chiefs, Mr. Behrendt was the only Jew to win in the primaries.
