Attorney-general May Reopen Case of Shiels Demonstrators

Download PDF for this date

The office of the attorney-general of Palestine may appeal the decision of Magistrate Harkavya who yesterday acquitted, after an all day hearing, the five Jews charged with participating in the demonstration against Dr. Drummond Shiels, British under-secretary for the Colonies. Magistrate Harkavy’s action was thought to have ended the comedy of errors which resulted when the five were released one day on an alleged order from the High Commissioner and rearrested the follow-day when it was learned that the order coming over the telephone had been misunderstood.

Police Superintendent Smith has said that the court which first acquitted the demonstrators had been misled as no instructions were received to withdraw the charges and the attorney-general had not ordered them withdrawn.
