Julius L. Meier, independent candidate for governor, was yesterday elected governor of the state of Oregon. The governor-elect is head of the Meier-Frank department store, the largest west of the Mississippi. It was founded in 1857 by the father of the newly-elected chief executive.
Julius Meier was born in Portland in 1874. He is married and has two daughters. A graduate of the University of Oregon, he entered a law partnership in 1895 with Senator George W. Joseph who last spring received the Republican nomination for governor. When Senator Joseph died suddenly shortly after the primaries, Mr. Meier entered the campaign as an independent candidate to take the place of his friend and law partner.
Mr. Meier is very active in Jewish communal life, among his philanthropies being the establishment of a B’nai B’rith center and summer camp for boys and girls. He is a trustee of Temple Beth Israel, president of the Portland Jewish Shelter Home and prominent in B’nai B’rith work.
