About 5,000 parents of high school and under-graduate elementary school children attended a demonstration Sunday night at the Thomas Jefferson High School, Brooklyn, which was arranged by the League of the Jewish Youth for the purpose of familiarizing the community with the experiment of teaching Hebrew in the city high schools which is now being tried by the Board of Education of New York.
The speakers appealed to the parents and children to support the experiment and to demand that more classes be opened in other high schools. Although the audience was warned that no college entrance recognition has yet been procured for Hebrew the enthusiasm for Hebrew in the high schools was unlimited. When a message was received from Dr. Elias Lieberman, principal of Thomas Jefferson High School, testifying to the successful experiment which is being made in his school the applause lasted for many minutes.
About 1,000 parents signed cards requesting further information and indicating a desire to have their own children take Hebrew in the schools.
Judah Lapson, director of the League, acted as chairman. The speakers were Joseph Bragin, principal of the Hebrew High School and Chas. A. Cowen, Zionist orator.
