The present economic depression in the United States has caused a drop in the income of Hebrew schools in 13 American cities where the present condition of the Hebrew schools was investigated, according to a report submitted to the executive committee of the National Council for Jewish Education. The cities surveyed were New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Buffalo, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Indianapolis.
The report states that incomes from tuition fees as well as donations and contributions have declined, especially in New York, Boston and Pittsburgh. As a result, the size of teaching staffs has been reduced in many cases and several classes have been consolidated.
