Announcement of awards in the one-act play-writing contest, conducted by the Metropolitan League of Jewish Community Associations, has been made by the judges. The contest was conducted by the Metropolitan League in an effort to secure additional one-act plays suitable for production by the Little Theatre groups of Y. M. H. A.’s and Jewish Centers. Over 50 plays were submitted by contestants throughout the country, and after long consideration, the judges awarded prizes to the five following playwrights: Irving Stone, New York City, for his play, “The White Life”; Jacob Feinstein, Baltimore, Md., author of “His Eyes”; Miss Eva Steen of Brooklyn, for her play “Escaped”; Elias Ginsburg, New York City, for his play, “We Never Die”; Irving Einstein of Brooklyn, who wrote “What’s in a Name.”
The judges were Jack Weiser, producer of Broadway plays and former play reader for Shubert’s; Philip Gross, dramatic director of the Bronx Y. M. and Y. W. H. A., and Dr. Mordecai Soltes, director of the Jewish Extension Education Department of the Jewish Welfare Board.
It is planned that the above plays will be given special consideration for production in the National Dramatic Contest for Jewish Centers, which will be held in May, 1931, in the new Little Theatre of the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue, New York City.
