For the second time the City Board of Adjustment of St. Louis has refused to grant a permit to the “Thaarat Hamishpoco Society” of the Beth Hayahaduth Congregation to remodel a residence on Maple Avenue for a “mikvah,” or Orthodox Jewish ritual bath for women. The residence had already been purchased by the Orthodox group.

Opposition by Jewish neighbors to the “mikvah” on the ground that it would be a nuisance and a violation of the zoning law has been expressed since last June to the Building Commissioner. An appeal to the Board of Adjustment was taken, and after several months of consideration the Board, by a vote of four to one, upheld the Commissioner’s refusal to grant the permit.
