Between 15 and 20 percent of the orange crop in the Judean orange belt is estimated to have been destroyed by the great storm which has been raging in Palestine since Saturday. The storm is continuing unabated, causing so far at least one death, an employee at the Haifa Hospital being electrocuted when a live wire was broken down by the storm.
There was a rumour in circulation here yesterday that the newly-built breakwater of the Haifa Harbour now being constructed had been washed away. The rumour was immediately denied in an official statement, but despite the official assurance it is again reported to-day that the breakwater of the Haifa Harbour is in grave danger of being washed away by the storms. Several railway sidings have already been carried into the sea, and it is feared that the huge crane is on the point of being swept away.
The huge seas have wrought havoc at Jaffa, where 30 lighters have been smashed, and carried with their stores to the bottom of the sea. The sea is tearing up the promenade and flooding many buildings.
