The first official intimation of a possible return of Jews to Hebron, from which they fled after the massacre of August 1929, was made to-day in the course of an interview which the Administration of the Vaad Leumi had with the Acting High Commissioner, Mr. Young.
It was Rabbi Ostrowski who raised the question, by asking the Government to provide security for those Jews who would return to Hebron. He did not mention, however, the number of those who would return or when they would return.
Mr. Ben Zvi, the Palestine Labour leader, submitted the budget of the Palestine Jewish Communities, which now require the sanction of the Government, in accordance with the provisions of the Palestine Jewish Communities Ordinance. Mr. Ben Zvi, too, raised the question of security.
Mr. Elmaleh urged that the Government should do something quickly to put right the position on the Jerusalem Municipality, where there are at present no Jewish representatives. The Jewish members of the Jerusalem Municipality resigned in protest when the Mayor, Ragheb Bey Nashashibi, went to London as a member of the Palestine Arab Delegation, and the Christian Vice-Mayor was appointed as Acting Mayor, although he represented a smaller section of the population than the Jewish Vice-Mayor, Mr. Chaim Solomon.
The Delegation also urged on the Government the need of exercising the greatest care in connection with the approaching Palestine census.
