The third anniversary of the opening of the Bureya region in Siberia for Jewish colonisation has just been celebrated at Tichonkoye, the centre of the region. Mr. Katz, who came from Moscow for the celebration, delivered the chief address, conveying to the colonists the greetings of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee, the Comzet and the American organisation “Icor”.
There are in Bureya to-day five Soviet Collectives or Sovkhozi; four collectives of newly-arrived immigrants; half a dozen Government and co-operative undertakings; and an agricultural technicum. The Jewish population of Bureya has increased by fourteen hundred in the last few months, it is stated, and the total number of Jews in Bureya now is 4,000.
