The realization of the aims of Zionism depends entirely of the Saloniki Jewish community, who arrived here today informed leaders of the Zionist Congress. He reported that although a thousand cavalrymen are riding through the streets of the city helping the police maintain peace, the Jews believe that their position is far from secure and are anxious to organize their own defense corps.

The Saloniki leader, who hurried here to ask the Congress for assistance, reported that 42 Jewish houses had been completely destroyed by fire, 20 Torah Scrolls ripped to pieces when the rioters burned a synagogue and that 1,500 Jewish men, women and children are crowding Jewish public institutions and are greatly in need. All four Jewish quarters of the city are deserted and look as they would after a battle, he stated.
