Blaming Communists for the recent anti-Jewish outbreaks in Saloniki, the Greek consul in Warsaw stated today during a visit to the office of the Warsaw Jewish community that the Greek people were never inclined toward anti-Semitism and that Premier Venizelos of Greece is a friend of the Jewish people.
The Consul was greeted by the Kehillah leaders, Prof. Abraham Schorr and M. Feldstein. In greeting the Consul, Prof. Schorr pointed out that the Greek government is under obligation to fight anti-Semitism in Greece and to compensate the Jewish victims of the recent Saloniki pogrom.
The visit of the Consul to the Warsaw Kchillah office was in connection with the proposal of the local rabbinate to declare a “cherem,” or religious boycott, against esrogim (a kind of citrus fruit used in the Succoth religious services) that are imported here every year from Greece, in retaliation for the recent pogrom in Saloniki.
