The idea that Bureya is going to be developed exclusively as an agricultural area must be dropped, Mr. Levin, the Secretary of the Bureya Regional Communist Party Committee, declared, speaking at a Conference of the Bureya Communist Party, which has just been held there. On the contrary, he said, Bureya will develop mainly along industrial lines. A geographical expedition, which has been at work this year in Bureya, and has so far examined only a very small section of the country, has found over 40 million tons of iron, about 500 million tons of graphite and many other minerals. Bureya will become the metallurgical base of the entire Far East, Mr. Levin claimed. Work will be started next year, he said, to build a silicate and brick factory in Tichonkoye, at a cost of 1½ million roubles, and a number of other factories will be erected in other parts of Bureya. In three years’ time, he concluded, the face of Bureya will be entirely changed. It will be a region of factories, stores and Soviet and collective farms.
