The anti-Jewish student disturbances which broke out at Cracow University yesterday are spreading to the other universities in the country, and attacks on Jewish students have already occurred at Warsaw University.
The situation at Cracow continues to be very alarming, and the authorities have decided to keep the University closed for the present. Some rioting took place to-day. The antisemitic students belonging to the National Democratic Party held a meeting in the morning, and proceeded to march on the Jewish Students’ Home, where they smashed windows, and injured two Jewish students. The police soon arrived on the scene, however, and dispersed the demonstrators, who went off singing antisemitic and patriotic songs.
The Jewish students afterwards started to hold a protest meeting in the vicinity of the University, but the police ordered them to disperse.
In the afternoon a big crowd of National Democratic students again tried to break through to the Jewish Students’ Home, but they were dispersed by a force of mounted police.
The antisemitic students are in a state of wild fury, and one of the lecturers at the University, Dr. Kruszynski, a non-Jew, who spoke to them protesting against the anti-Jewish disorders as unfitting for a University, was set upon by the students and injured.
The Rector of Cracow University has issued an appeal to the patriotic feelings of the students, pointing out that disorders are harmful to the interests of the country, and calling on them to accept the guidance of the University authorities and return to their peaceful studies.
The entire Cracow press, with the exception of the Polish Socialist Party’s organ “Naprzod”, puts the blame for the disturbances on the Jewish students, alleging that they provoked the anger of the National Democratic students by their arrogance.
