Jewish Borough President Elected in New York City’s Biggest Borough

Mr. Samuel D. Levy, for ten years Special Sessions Justice assigned to the Children’s Court in New York, has been elected President of Manhattan, the largest Borough in New York, defeating the Republican candidate, Colonel Edward Carrington, by a big majority of 181,219 votes, Mr. Levy polling 247,110 votes.

Mr. Levy, who will be 70 years of age on January 12th., was born in New York, and he has taken a very prominent part in both the general and the Jewish life of the city. He is a member of the National Democratic Club of New York, and he also belongs to the New York State Association of Magistrates, the National Commission on Social Work, the county Lawyers’ Association and many other organisations.

During the Great War he was Vice-President of the Patriotic Service League and President of the National Association for the Study and Education of Exceptional Children. He is a Director of the Child Welfare of America and a lecturer on subjects of child life and a specialist in child studies.

In Jewish affairs he has been for 14 years Director of the United Hebrew Charities, and for nine years President and for 20 years Vice-President of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Orphan Asylum. He was a member of the original committee which formed the Federation of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York.

He is Director of the Society for Mental Hygiene for Jews, and Trustee of the Jewish Education Association, and he belongs to the B’nai B’rith and to Temple Emannu-el.
