The Palestine Government has refused to make an immediate additional grant of £4,000, supplementary to the £20,000 grant which it is making at present towards the Jewish educational system in Palestine. The refusal is conveyed in a letter which was received to-day by the Jewish Agency Executive.
Dr. Maurice B. Hexter and Dr. Berkson, members of the Jewish Agency Executive, saw to-day Mr. Bowman, the head of the Palestine Government Education Department, with reference to the general Jewish school question, which continues to be very unsettled. The Vaad Leumi has broken off its intervention, on finding that it is impossible to make good the shortage of £ 8,000 in the current year’s educational budget, even after the teachers had decided to give up £8,000 under the head of salaries.
The Tel Aviv Municipality suggests an increase in school fees by £2,000, and spreading the remaining £6,000 over the ensuing years, but the Jewish Agency Executive has rejected this proposal.
