All the Zionist Parties and groups in Austria have had an extraordinary meeting here to consider what steps to take in view of the threats made by the Hitlerists that they will organise a pogrom during the annual pilgrimage march next Sunday to the grave of Dr. Theodor Herzl, the founder of the Zionist Organisation, to commemorate his birthday (72nd.), which occurred last Monday.
The chief Hitlerist organ here went so far as to say that many of the marchers to Herzl’s grave would stop with him in the cemetery for good.
The meeting decided unanimously that the march will take place under all circumstances, because if the Jews showed that they were intimidated, the Hitlerists would only become more aggressive. If the police would not do their duty of keeping order during a Jewish pilgrimage to the grave of the Zionist leader, the Zionist youth organisations would undertake themselves to maintain order.
Representations in this sense were made to the Vienna Police Presidium which has in reply assured the Zionist leaders that the police will guarantee absolute order in connection with the march on Sunday to Dr. Herzl’s grave. The entire resources of the police force will be drawn upon to make it impossible for any hostile demonstration to occur and the Jewish population, it is stated, may arrange their march without any fear. Women and children may join in the procession, and no one will be allowed to come to any harm.
The firm tone adopted by the police authorities has put a stop to the Hitlerist threats, and some of the Hitlerist papers deny that there had been any intention to disturb the Herzl pilgrimage.
