The word “Christian” occurs several times in the programme of the new German Government, the “Manchester Guardian” writes to-day, but the programme has nothing to do with Christianity. The Hungarian White Terrorist detachments of 1919, whose atrocities are amongst the most awful in modern times, the instigators of pogroms throughout Eastern and southeastern Europe, the Austrian Fascists, and all the terrorists and gangsters who have defiled European civilisation since the war have been fond of assuming names like “Christian”, “Social”, “National”, or have combined them in hyphenations like “Christian-Social” or “Christian-National”, so that the foul things they stand for might be hidden under a lofty name.
That is the significance of the word “Christian” in the von Papen Government’s programme. The Government is silent about the unchristian things that are going on in Germany now – the ever-increasing arrogance of the Nazis, the incitements to violence against Jews and Republicans, and Xenophobia (another Englishman has been arrested by Nazis, the third within a few months); the mobbing of a defenceless Jewish girl at Breslau; the insults and menaces to Jewish children in the schools (so that many cautious parents are escorting children to and from school for fear lest they be mobbed by the “Christian” children).
