The Central Board of the Union of Austrian Jews has issued an appeal over the signature of the President, Dr. Jacob Ornstein, calling upon all Jews in Austria to join the Union.
Economic displacement of Jews and the withdrawal of citizen rights from Jews are the aims of the race antisemites, who seek to thrust us Jews, politically, socially and economically, back into the conditions of the Middle Ages, the appeal says. We find no effective protection anywhere against the daily attacks made upon our rights of equal citizenship. The only help is self-help, if we are to save the rights which we have won after so much hard fighting. Against organised antisemitism we must put the organised force of Jewry. We must defend ourselves, while there is still time. We must put aside all internal Jewish conflicts, in order to strengthen our united front against the common enemy. Every Jew in Austria must be a member of our organisation, and thus increase the strength of our defensive body. If every Jew is in our Union, every Jewish woman in our Women’s Organisation, every young Jew and every Jewish girl in the youth union, and every Jewish student in our students’ union, we shall be able to beat back all attacks made upon our rights and upon our justified place in the State.
