Support by all Jewish organizations of the Hillel foundations, now sponsored by B’nai Brith in eight American universities, was urged by Harry Lashkowitz, of Fargo, N. D., president of the sixth District grand lodge at its annual convention here.
Mr. Lashkowitz recited the financial difficulties confronting the order and appealed to other Jewish organizations to cooperate in keeping alove the Hillel centers for Jewish university students in order to build a sound Jewish leadership for the future.
Among other recommendations by the president were: that Jewish and Christian organizations be brought together at meetings or banquets at least once yearly for good will purposes; that “herculanean efforts” be made to conserve membership of the lodges; that committees be formed, as are functioning in Chicago,to prevent discrimination against Jews in employment during the depression; that no drastic letdown be allowed in the philanthropic and charitable institutions sponsored by B’nai B’rith.
Addresses of welcome were given to the 400 delegates and visitors by the Rev. Otto Hauser, representing Mayor Daniel W. Hoan, and by Joseph Padway, representing Gilead Lodge of Milwaukee.
Joseph F. Grossman, Chicago, second vice president of the order, gave the response to the welcome. Rabbi Philip Kleinman of Milwaukee gave the invocation.
