Elihu Lewin-Epstein, Zionist pioneer and one of the founders of the Palestine colony of Rehoboth, died this morning at Baden Nauheim following a heart attack.
Mr. Lewin-Epstein, who was sixty-nine years old and a native of Poland, had lived in the United States for almost three decades. he was planning to take up permanent settlement in Palestine when he was stricken.
The deceased was the founder of the Carmel Wine Association, which undertook to distribute the wine of the Judaean colonies in Palestine. he was also a director of the Hias. Recently he published a book of memoirs written in Hebrew.
Mr. Lewin-Epstein served as treasurer of the Federation of American Zionists and of the Provisional Zionist Committee formed during the war under the leadership of Justice Louis D. Brandeis.
In 1918 he went to Palestine with the medical unit organized by Hadassah.
A son, Rechaviah Lewin-Epstein, is in Palestine as the manager of the Palestine branch of the American Economic Committee for Palestine. Another son, Dr. Samuel Lewin-Epstein, also lives in Palestine. A third son and a daughter, Mrs. H. M. Hershman, residind in the United States, survive.
