In the presence of Mayor Frank Murphy and a host of sympathizers, a five-cent kosher kitchen was opened here at the Beth Tephila Emanuel Synagogue. Meals will be served to adults for five cents, and to children for two cents.
Sponsors of the project stated that they have secured enough supplies to run the kitchen for a month, serving meals every day to 300 people between the hours of 12 noon and 4 p. m.
Max L. Black, attorney, president of the group sponsoring the project, presided at the opening ceremonies. Mayor Murphy, who partook of the first meal, stated in a brief address:
“This is a splendid example of Jewish social consciousness. Organized charities cannot cope with the situation and it is up to small neighborhood groups to care for the needy.
Rabbi Joseph Eisenman was another speaker.
