An unexpected respite in the controversy over the ouster of the Body and Soul Clinic in the Church of St. Mark’s in the Bouwerie, for at least a period of one month was announced by Dr. Edward S. Cowles, director of the clinic and leader of the fight against its ejection.
Dr. Cowles, who threatened to conduct the clinic on the sidewalks outside of the church, if the vestry locked its doors against it as it promised to do yesterday, made known his willingness to suspend the clinic for one month.
In a communication addressed to Dr. William N. Guthrie, rector of the church, Dr. Cowles makes it clear that he accepts suspension for one month so that the necessary repairs might be made in the church but that this does not prejudice in any way any rights on his part to take further action after September 1st.
The statement of Dr. Cowles is an acceptance of the terms laid down by Dr. Guthrie recently in his last communication in connection with the controversy in the clinic matter.
The communication of Dr. Cowles declared:
“I am suspending the rights of the clinic beginning tomorrow in order that necessary cleaning and repairs may be made, on the distinct understanding that such rights are in no way impaired and that the assertion of such rights may be resumed September 1 and thereafter. I am moved to this action largely by your renewed assurance that if you have the right to do so you will not object to the use of the church by the clinic on and after September 1; and will consent to such use in so far as you have the power.”
