Juliu Maniu, leader of the National Peasant Party and former Premier of Roumania, reconsidered his refusal of last week and informed a delegation of his party that he is willing to return to active political leadership.
The announcement by Dr. Maniu is regarded as preliminary to his acceptance of the Premiership of Roumania despite the denial by King Carol last week of Premier Alexander Vaida Voevod’s impending resignation.
Dr. Maniu retired from the premiership two years ago. A declaration of his intentions published in the “Curental,” declared:
“The motives for my retiring were connected with dissensions between the highest constitutional factor and myself. The way in which the constitutional prerogative has been exercised since the restoration has been irreconcilable to my conception of a free government under a constitutional monarchy. You will agree I could not head a government with tied hands, accepting responsibility for actions originating with the King’s entourage between whom and myself there is mutual distrust.
“I hope soon to see the dawn of true constitutionalism which will support the throne we respect which is surrounded by deleterious factors.”
