Word was received here yesterday of the sudden death aboard the “Bremen” of Henry Friend, pioneer Jewish merchant of Chicago.
Mr. Friend, who was seventy years old, succumbed to an attack of acute indigestion as the ship was one day out of Bremenhaven. With him when he passed were his friends, Mayor Anton J. Cermak of Chicago, Harry Blum, a Chicago merchant, and Dr. Frank J. Jirka, son-in-law of Mayor Cermak. Mr. Friend was enroute to Carlsbad for the cure.
Born in Roumania he came to the United States at the age of 15.
The body will be brought back to the United States aboard the “Bremen” when it arrives on its return trip, August 11, and funeral services will be held several days later.
The deceased was a director of Temple Sholom.
