Germany has the appearance of a country on the verge of civil war, stated B. Z. Goldberg, an associate editor of the “Day,” and columnist on the “Brooklyn Daily Eagle,” to a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency upon his return to New York on Friday from a stay of three months abroad.
The Hitlerites are doing all within their power to convey the impression abroad that they constitute an element to be reckoned with and feared, Mr. Goldberg said. Unquestionably this places the Jews and others who are the victims of the Nazi program in a most uncomfortable situation. But in the long run, Mr. Goldberg stated, an attempted reign of terror will defeat the purpose of the Nazis for the Germans are not the people to take kindly to an effort of this variety.
Mr. Goldberg visited many countries, and made his longest stay in Palestine, which he lauded as the country with the most normal conditions. There are few noticeable traces of the world slump in Palestine, he said.
The situation in Palestine seems particularly encouraging to Mr. Goldberg because of the deep interest evinced by the present head of the Palestine government in the economic development of the land. No High Commissioner for Palestine has evinced greater eagerness to see the land progress than has Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, according to Mr. Goldberg.
The economic situation of the Jews in Eastern Europe is distressing, particularly so in Poland, he stated. He added, however, that he had received assurances from a number of spokesmen that the Polish government is now evincing a more friendly spirit as regards the Jews.
Mr. Goldberg is a son-in-law of Sholom Aleichem, noted Yiddish author.
