The progress of Hadassah work in Palestine was fully reported upon and discussed at great length at the 18th Annual Convention of the women’s Zionist organization of America, which opened Sunday morning at the Hotel Commodore.
At the same time Zionist leaders of all groups emphasized the far-reaching importance of Hadassah’s efforts and praised those responsible for its achievements in Palestine.
Mrs. Edward Jacobs, National President of Hadassah, opened the convention in the presence of more than 1,500 women and in her report indicated what had been accomplished during the past twelve months.
“There is real hope”, stated Mrs. Jacobs, “at last of having executed the first steps in erecting proper buildings and facilities in Jerusalem toward a Medical Center that shall be connected with the Hebrew University. The first unit, a maternity pavillion, will be made possible through the personal efforts of Dr. Nathan Ratnoff, Chairman of the American Jewish Physicians’ Committee.”
Mrs. Jacobs also reported further progress with regard to the plans for hospital wirk outside of Jerusalem. The same program which was worked out for Tel Aviv has been worked out for Haifa, Mrs. Jacobs stated. The Kupat Holim Amamit (General Kupat Holim) operated for the benefit of the rural population initiated the year before has been well established during the last year and has a promising future.
A feature of the convention was a special luncheon during which a symposium on Jewish educational problems was carried out. One of the chief speakers at the luncheon was Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan, head of the Society
