One thousand certificates of the 4,500 labor certificates granted to the Jewish Agency by the Palestine government for the current six month period will be reserved for relatives of Palestine residents according to a decision of the Immigration Commission of the Jewish Agency yesterday.
Serious differences regarding the proportion of certificates to be made available to middle class settlers who have not sufficient funds to be admitted under the capitalist category, have arisen.
The General Zionists declare that middle class elements are now more important for Palestine development than chalutzim and demand that 1,500 of the labor certificates be made available for these middle class elements and 1,400 for chalutzim.
Unless this is done, they threaten to break up the coalition reached at last year’s World Zionist Congress and to recall the General Zionists from the Zionist Executive.
No decision has been reached as yet, but it is expected some compromise will be agreed upon with the allotment of between 500 and 1,000 certificates for middle class settlers.
