A testimonial dinner was given last night at the Metropolis Club to Joseph M. Levine, President of the Free Synagogue, on the dual occasion of his fiftieth birthday and of his twenty-five years of association with the work of the Free Synagogue, which he now heads as its president.
Joined in offering tribute to Mr. Levine for his leadership in and devotion to Jewish causes, were representatives of the various departments of the Synagogue and of the Jewish Institute of Religion, a seminary for the training of Rabbis, of which Mr. Levine was one of the co-founders and is at present a trustee.
The speakers at the dinner were Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Rabbi of the Free Synagogue and President of the Jewish Institute of Religion; Dr. Sidney E. Goldstein, Associate Rabbi of the Free Synagogue and Professor of Social Service at the Jewish Institute of Religion, who spoke on his behalf and that of the Rabbis associated in the ministry of the Free Synagogue, J. X. Cohen and Morton M. Berman; Charles E. Bloch, past President of the Synagogue. Others who gave greetings were Frederick L. Guggenheimer, for the Social Service Board; Miss Bella Strauss for the School Board; Mrs. George Lion Cohen for the Women’s Organization; and Abraham Freedman for the Men’s Club. For the Jewish Institute of Religion, Dr. George Alexander Kohut, a fellow trustee, was the spokesman.
