A new synagogue, to be known as the Little Temple has been organized in New York City with Rabbi Ralph A. Habas, as spiritual leader and Harold Riegelman, chairman of the Committee of Sponsors.
Membership in this congregation is limited to 200 and an effort will be made to restore something of the intimate spirit of the traditional synagogue.
“The Little Temple is a Reform Temple,” according to its officers. “It is experimental. It is experimental in that its membership will be limited to 200, and also in the sense that it represents an effort to adjust religious administration to the modern need for religion—a need profoundly affected by educational, scientific, social and economic trends of the time.”
The Little Temple, which held its first service on Friday evening, will meet temporarily at 35 East 62nd Street.
Messages of felicitation have been received from Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, son of the founder of reform Judaism and Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president of Hebrew Union College.
