Two American citizens, Chaim Cohen and Elieser Aronowsky, have been arrested in Havana on the charge of speaking publicly against the Cuban Government. The latter is the business representative of the New York Yiddish daily, “Der Tog”.
In view of the fact that Havana is now under martial law, the arrests are regarded with considerable seriousness. Without any investigation, the police have sent both the arrested persons for trial by the Havana military court.
Jewish public opinion here is very much concerned about the affair, but they are convinced of Aronowsky’s innocence and are hopeful that he will be released. The Jewish institutions are to intervene with the government.
On inquiry by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, in New York, it was elicited from the business department of “Der Tog”, that Aronowsky has been the business representative of that journal in Havana during the past three years. He is described as a man of regular habits whose work is satisfactorily carried out. It was also pointed out that Aronowsky is a nationally-minded young man and quite remote from radical activities. He is the author of a book of verses as well as of stories. He was at one time editor of a Jewish paper in Havana.
