History was made in the Jewish community here yesterday when officials of state and city participated in the formal laying of the cornerstone for San Francisco’s new $650,000 Jewish Community Center.
Governor James Rolph, Jr. and Mayor Angelo J. Rossi were the principal speakers. Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel, secretary of the Center committee, presided.
Yesterday’s ceremonies marked four months of progress since ground was broken for the new institution.
Laying of the cornerstone yesterday marked the realization of a dream of years by local Jewish leaders.
More than 40 local organizations, representing every shade of Jewry, united first in the movement for a center which would serve as a nucleus for Jewish religious, recreational and educational activities.
Then a drive for funds was launched, with the result that $650,000 was secured for purchase of the property and erection of the building.
Thousands of members of the Jewish community, together with men and women of all creeds, attended the ceremonies yesterday.
