Mrs. Ruth Kashare Tishkoff, former secretary of the California Teachers’ Association, died at her home in Los Angeles after a brief illness. She was a prominent member of a number of Los Angeles clubs and active in educational circles. She is survived by her husband, A. Tishkoff, and three children.
A threat to overthrow Emir Abdullah of Transjordan, if he persists in consummating the agreement to lease 70,000 dunams of his personal domain to a Jewish company, was voiced here yesterday at a meeting of the Istiklal, the Arab independent party, which has branches in Palestine, Transjordan, Iraq and Syria.
The meeting also submitted a petition to the Palestine High Commissioner, Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, requesting him to intervene and to prevent the lease of land in Transjordan to Jews.
A cabled request for intervention in their behalf was also sent yesterday to Charles Crane, head of the Institute of World Affairs in the United States.
The Arabs, in their cable to Mr. Crane, asked financial assistance to enable them to obtain possession of Emir Abdullah’s land.
Charles Crane, to whom Arab nationalities have appealed for aid to prevent the lease of Transjordan land to Jews, is well known for his pro-Arab sympathies.
In 1919, Mr. Crane headed the American Commisison on Mandates in Turkey appointed by President Wilson in 1919. President Wilson hoped to find in this report a basis for the formulation of a practical stand in connection with his sympathetic attitude toward Zionist aspirations in Palestine.
The report, which was completed before the Balfour Declaration, proved to be intensely pro-Arab and advance indication of its contents aroused considerable criticism. The result was that the report was never published.
