When it was pointed out to him how Palestine has been transformed in the last ten years as the result of Zionist efforts, which benefit also the Arab population, Mr. Shaw said:
That is just what Britain is always arguing about India, all that she has done for India. That’s what the Zionists always keep stressing — their achievements which are all the result of Jewish capital.
Passfield was right in his conception of Zionism, he added. He was misunderstood.
Speaking of the Hebrew University, Mr. Shaw said:
I am not in favor of a Jewish culture. What is Jewish culture? Belief in Jehovah. It should be destroyed. It should revive real European, modern, scientific culture. The Hebrew University is a contradiction in terms. So also, he added, are Oxford and Cambridge.
Asked how he accounted for the survival of the Jews, Mr. Shaw said that it was to be attributed to Jewish vitality and ability. It is very difficult to get rid of the Jew, he said. But he did not think that the Jews had any special mission to perform, he went on. It is all a myth, he declared. A large majority are misguided into thinking that they are the chosen people of God.
Asked about anti-Semitism, Mr. Shaw said that the Jews must cease to despise Gentiles. The Jew is still proud of his brains and powers, he said, still arrogant, still has the “chosen people” superstition. Asked how the Jew should combat the wave of anti-Semitism, he said that the Jew should go ahead, and not have any care. Just go along.
Reminded of the anti-Semitic excesses in Germany, Mr. Shaw said: “I deplore them. The people are silly and wild. I do not know that Jews occupy outstanding positions. They have brains, and are good in business.”
