It was on the night of last November 26-27 that six Christian Polish students were involved in a drunken brawl in which one of them, Jan Grotkowski, received a wound from which he died. This incident was followed by serious anti-Jewish excesses in Lemberg as well as in other parts of Poland where the arrest of a number of Jews on the charge of complicity in the death of Grotkowski was used by the anti-Semites as material for pogromist agitation. According to an interpellation submitted by the Club of Jewish Deputies, there were no less than 399 casualties in Lemberg alone, following Grotkowski’s death.
A sensational revelation was made today by the Yiddish paper, “Moment,” to the effect that Jan Grotkowski, the Polish student, whose death marked the opening of the recent Lemberg excesses, was murdered by a Christian student. The announcement also disclosed that the four Jews who had been arrested and imprisoned for months had been released only because a Christian youth had been arrested for the murder. The “Moment” reveals that the name of the arrested youth was being kept secret by the investigating authorities in order to enable them to complete their investigations.
