An attempt is now in progress to establish an association of the descendants of the great biblical and talmudical commentator, Rashi, who flourished in France from 1040 to 1105.
It has been known for some time that there are in the United States a number of families claiming descent from Rashi and the present project aims at uniting them in a definite organization.
Rashi, whose name is formed from the Hebrew initials of his full name, Rabbi Solomon bar Isaac, is the subject of many legends. There are also throughout Europe thousands of families claiming descent from him. He had no sons, but the various geneologies constructed by the numerous claimants trace their descent through the various branches of his family descended from his three daughters.
At a private meeting held last week the first step was taken here towards the organization of a convention aiming at attracting the various families claiming descent from Rashi. The society, which is to be known as Association of the Descendants of Rashi has its offices at present at 320 Grand Street, New York.
