Considerable annoyance is felt here at the disclosure that a whispering campaign has been in progress, for some time against Sir Isaac Isaacs, Governor-General of the Australian Commonwealth.
It appears that among the exclusive English set resentment is felt at the social precedence which must be accorded to the Jewish Governor-General. They feel it difficult to grow accustomed to the fact that the Governor-General is no longer a scion of one of the British noble houses. As part of the campaign against him, a rumor has been circulated that Sir Isaac Isaacs is to be succeeded by a British Peer and it is even suggested that the Jewish Governor-General may retire before his term is up.
A number of names prominent in Australian politics have also been mentioned as associated with the whispering campaign. Nevertheless, when this was brought to their notice, they immediately dissociated themselves from the vendetta.
