A general franchise has been announced for new elections to the Jewish Community on April 23rd.
Under the regulations all persons who have attained the age of twenty-one will be permitted to vote, excluding only unregistered members of the Jewish Community.
The authorities, who were approached for permission to change the constitution of the Jewish Community so as to enable women to vote and be elected, have agreed to permit women to be elected, but have restricted their voting powers. Women elected to offices in the Kehillah will not be permitted to vote on religious matters.
The concessions granted conclude a five years agitation to secure the franchise for women.
While the candidates have not yet been named, it is known that Dr. William Filderman will not stand for reelection as President of the Jewish Community, a decision, on the part of Dr. Filderman, which is generally regretted.
Dr. Filderman resigned as president of the Bucharest Jewish Community on January 6th, but the resignation was not accepted.
