With the German Parliamentary elections only four days off, the Jewish population is living in trepidation of what the future may bring.
To the general anxieties aroused among the Jews by the unrestrained agitation conducted against them by the Nazi press, is the silence maintained by Nazi spokesmen with regard to the Jewish question, a silence which has come to assume an ominous significance, particularly in view of the indifferent stand taken by non-Nazi parties. This description of the Jewish situation in Germany is brought back by an experienced observer who has just returned from a visit to Germany.
In an interview with a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, he related his impressions of the situation in Germany with particular reference to the Jewish question.
Nazi government leaders have main tained complete silence on the Jewish question and have resisted all efforts to be drawn out on the fate of the Jews. All requests for a statement on the Jewish question have been emphatically rejected, the observer declared.
A high official in the Foreign Office, who was requested for a statement by a Nazi spokesman, told the interviewer: “Don’t press for a reply. Don’t awaken slumbering forces.”
Counter to the silence of the government is the fierce anti-Jewish agitation of the Nazi press which has eluded any curbing despite the emergency decrees, which apparently do not in practice apply to incitement against
