Providing for the distribution of an estate estimated at more than $100,000, the will of Benjamin Strouse, retired Baltimore clothing firm official, has been filed for probate.
Ivan Haarburger, a pioneer figure in the commercial and public life of the Orange Free State and a leader of the Jewish Community, died in Bloemfontein.
Mr. Haarburger came to South Africa in 1888, and succeeded in establishing one of the largest warehouses of pianos and musical instruments in the country. He subsequently took a keen interest in municipal affairs and was elected mayor of Bloemfontein in 1912, holding that office until 1914.
In the field of Jewish affairs he took a leading part in the formation of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, which is now the representative body of South African Jewry. As a Zionist, he played a leading role in the various campaigns in support of Zionist funds.
Providing for the distribution of an estate estimated at more than $100,000, the will of Benjamin Strouse, retired Baltimore clothing firm official, has been filed for probate.The will bequeathed $500 each to the Jewish Children’s Society and the Sinai Hospital and $250 each to the Hebrew Benevolent Society and the Associated Jewish Charities.
