Last night a huge mass meeting, held in the midst of the Jewish quarter, and addressed by the notorious Nazi leader, Frauenfeld, compelled the closing of the Jewish shops for several hours.
This is part of the alarming increase in anti-Semitic propaganda evident throughout Austria, since the announcement of the Nazi victory in Germany. Emboldened by the triumph of their German colleagues, the Nazis here have opened an intense campaign with the object of forcing the resignation of the government and a new election in which they hope for success.
Nazi slogans and proclamations announce that they no longer regard the present rulers of Austria as having any authority over them, but that “Hitler is our chancellor”.
While last night’s meeting, which attracted a concourse of some 40,000 people was in progress, a ministerial council was convened in order to discuss measures to counteract the growth of the Nazis in Austria. The ministerial council is also apparently anxious about plans which are being made for an enormous Nazi offensive, which is to be opened with a campaign led by 150 Nazi speakers, assisted by propagandists from Germany.
