Minister Goebbels today took a further step in the campaign to eliminate Jews from the cultural professions, by prohibiting the concert which was to be conducted by Bruno Walter at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. This follows the prohibition of a similar concert which was to be conducted by Bruno Walter at Leipzig last night. The official excuse given for the prohibition at Leipzig was that the concert threatened to disturb public order. Bruno Walter had just returned from New York where he had conducted the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
It is pointed out here that though Bruno Walter is attacked as a Jew, he actually resigned from the Jewish Community some time ago and changed his name to Schlessinger.
Although not satisfied with only excluding Jews from the employment of their talents, the Nazis are also engaging in a drive even to wipe out the memory of illustrious Jews of the past, whose names have been perpetuated in the names of streets and institutions. One of the first Nazi acts in this connection was the changing of Rathenauplatz in Berlin to Wilhelmplatz. The Nazi Government of Thuringia has now decided to change the names of streets in the cities of Thuringia, which may have any Marxist or Jewish connection. They will be renamed after the leaders of the Nazi Party.
