In quarters close to Secretary of State Hull, it is understood that he is taking a close personal interest in the situation of the Jews in Germany. It appears that he has personally indicated to the State Department that he is deeply concerned that the actual facts should be gathered by the Berlin Embassy and Consular offices throughout Germany pursuant to the cabled instructions of the Department.
It has not yet been indicated by the State Department how soon the reports from Germany would be forthcoming, although every effort has been made to insure a rapid collation of the facts.
Particular significance is attached here to the department’s public and official communique expressing grave concern regarding the German situation. It is described as most unusual in diplomatic practice as Governments ordinarily scrupulously avoid action which might raise the question of the propriety of one government interceding with respect to another government’s citizens.
