im for Germany. Illustrations can be multiplied without end to prove that it is common not only among nations but exists among all social groups as well,—in other words, it is common to human nature.

Other students of the careers of Adolf Hitler and his associates declare more emphatically that their motivations are rooted in a basic sense of inferiority.

They point out, for example, that Hitler is not proud of his humble origin. In the German-Austrian environment in which he lived as a boy he suffered much from the fact that his mother was a Bohemian who spoke very imperfect German. Bohemians were not considered first class citizens in those days and he was snubbed by his fellows who had a decided feeling of superiority in being “real” Germans or Austrians. There is no doubt, psychologists point out, that Hitler’s memory of belonging to an “inferior” race has had much to do with his intense worship of the so-called Nordic idol.

His education was confined to the elementary schools and he is said to be very sensitive about this defect in his intellectual development. He knows very little about the real intellectual Germany—the Germany of Goethe, Schiller and Beethoven. He has been described as a “child of the masses who despises the cultured classes which have long been the bearers of the German ‘Kultur’.”

Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, minister of propaganda,, is a very short man, handicapped by a club foot. Goebbels himself is very sensitive about his deformity. He is bitter about the fact that he was unable to participate in. the war. But he now makes up for any deficiencies of his body by indulging in a particular violence of language. His speeches have been characterized as being “astonishingly coarse.” Having spent some years of his life in poverty, he_ now demands every luxury for himself.

Because of these deformities, say psychologists, these men are driven by a will to power which is endangering the lives and fortunes of hundreds of thousands.
