Australia added its voice to the world-wide cry against Hitler’s persecution of the Jews in a monster demonstration at Town Hall here tonight. “It is the duty of every civilized nation to denounce Hitler” thundered the Rt. Hon. William A. Watt, ex-Premier of Australia, in replying to the German claim that the policy of Jewish persecution was a domestic affair.
“It is not only our right but our obligation to protest against this appalling exhibition of intolerance and hate,” declared Labor Minister Jones, representing the government of Victoria. “Germany has done a dishonorable thing; while demanding justice for herself, she has denied justice for the Jews.”
The President of the Australian Union of Churches of All Christian Denominations, Reverend Cain, said that “The conscience of all Christian churches must direct their sympathy to the Jews in this, their hour of trial.” Among the distinguished members of the audience were several government ministers, the chancellor of the university, and leaders of all political parties.
An appeal for relief brought eighty thousand pounds, which will be forwarded to London for distribution to German Jews.
