Joel Spiegel, representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in Lemberg and Eastern Poland, who is now in New York, declared that terrorized Jews are fleeing from their homes in Germany to foreign sanctuaries.
In their mad flight to neighboring countries, homes, business, friends, and all belongings are abandoned, Mr. Spiegel said. Afraid to appear in the streets, many native and foreign-born German Jews are doomed to remain in areas where persecution is rife, while a few of the bolder ones make their way through Nazi guards to safety in Poland and other countries, according to the journalist.
Many of the refugees come to Poland which is itself poor and is suffering bitter need as a result of the existing economic crisis, continued Mr. Speigel. The Polish government is friendly to the refugees, but is unable to offer them more than a temporary refuge.
Mr. Spiegel, whose visit to the United States and Canada will extend for several months, is to deliver a series of lectures throughout the country on the economic situation of the Jews in Poland.
