The last rites for Mrs. Belle Moskowitz, regarded as the most influential woman in politics, were held yesterday at Temple Emanu-el in the presence of thousands of friends and admirers.
There was a great outpouring of the East Side, who rubbed shoulders with New York’s notables in a last tribute to an outstanding social welfare worker.
Alfred E. Smith, four times governor of the State of New York, and Democratic candidate for President, whose career Mrs. Moskowitz had helped to advance, in fourteen years of association, sat with Mrs. Smith beside Dr. Henry Moskowitz, and other members of the bereaved family.
The services were conducted by Rabbis Stephen S. Wise and Nathan Krass, who paid tribute to her memory.
Immediately after the services, the funeral cortege, accompanied by a motorcycle escort, proceeded to Tarrytown, where interment took place at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Expressions of condolence have been received from thousands by members of the family. Beginning with President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, messages of sympathy were received from State officials, union labor leaders, politicians, social workers, and writers.
