A “new deal” for Jews in Germany is foreseen by George Seibel, president of the National Executive Committee of the American Turnerbund, from headquarters in Pittsburgh.
Mr. Seibel, in a statement to the Jewish Daily Bulletin, expresses opposition to persecution in Germany and looks forward to a speedy end to this “temporary aberration.”
“I am opposed to the persecution of anybody on account of race, religion, or political opinions,” Mr. Seibel declared. “For that reason I deplore many things that have taken place in Germany; and I certainly hope the reports have been exaggerated.
“The German people have always seemed to me to be sane and kindly. Many of the stories emanating from Germany with regard to anti-Semitic activities seem almost unbelievable.”
In considering the future of Jews in Germany, Mr. Seibel writes, “I feel sure that whatever temporary aberrations have occurred will soon be ended, and the Jewish citizens of Germany, who have contributed so much to its greatness, will be accorded equal rights with all other citizens.
“Remembering how German-Americans were treated in this country during the Great War, I understand how a people can fall victim to such temporary aberrations—but I also know how brief is their duration,” he concluded.
